The International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers’ Unions (ICEM) supports the worldwide day of action planned by three Global Union Federations and the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) for 26 June, and encourages trade unions to participate. The day is intended to highlight the continued violations of workers’ rights in Iran.
Organisation of activities to mark the day is being done jointly by the International Union of Food and Agricultural Workers (IUF), the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), and Education International (EI), along with the ITUC.
Iranian trade unionists have faced numerous illegal arrests and victimization of their rights by a zealous regime in Iran. The day of action will call for the reinstatement of those workers who have lost their jobs as a result of their support for the union. The day of action will also seek to place pressure on the Iranian leadership to sign Core ILO Conventions 87 and 98, the Freedom of Association and the Right to Bargain Collectively Conventions, and to commence with collective bargaining agreements between legitimate workers’ representatives and employers.
The day of action will also see protests at Iranian embassies and consulates around the world. A recent shocking example of workers’ rights abuses was the recent May Day rally in Tehran; peaceful unionists were beaten and tear gassed, and secret police detained 100 rights seekers.
The 26 June day of action will see the international labour movement united in the call for release of all imprisoned trade unionists, recognition of Iranian independent workers’ organizations, ratification of ILO Conventions, and a halt to the job discrimination of trade union sympathizers.
